A high resolution IUE spectrum of the Population II star HD 140283 has been analyzed to search for the B I 2496 Å resonance doublet. No features attributable to this element have been found. An upper limit for the B abundance of B/H < 10-11, i.e. more than one order of magnitude less than the solar value has been derived. The presence of Li in the atmosphere of HD 140283 rules out significant depletion for the more refractory B, and it is argued that the protostellar nebula was substantially free of B. This value favours the idea of a gradual increase in B during the Galaxy's life, but a more abrupt B synthesis is still possible if HD 140283 were one of the first stars formed in the Galaxy. The Li/B observed ratio in HD 140283 is more than 25 times that predicted by the spallation theory of high energy GCR with CNO nuclei, ruling out a spallogenic origin for the lithium observed in Population II stars and supporting its primordial origin.
