A numerical model of the equatorial ionosphere is used to analyze the effect of the meridional and zonal components of electromagnetic drift on the diurnal development of stratifications of the F2-region. It is shown that the daytime zonal drift of plasma from the evening to the morning side is the most important factor leading to the development of stratifications in morning hours.
