The UV variability of Z Andromedae symbiotic stars was monitored by IUE. Results show that the observed UV-near Ir energy distribution can be accounted for by three components: a latetype giant star, responsible for the observed flux in the near IR; a compact object providing the observed spectrum in the far-UV; and an extended nebular region giving rise to gas recombination continuum and emission lines.
