Spectra of GD 1401, a faint (V = 14 m.4) apparently cataclysmic object are presented. The generally accepted model for novalike systems fails to explain the stong Balmer lines in absorption at all phases. A nonstandard model, where the accretion disk is optically thin in the visible region of the spectrum is proposed. The main contribution of the flux is provided by a white dwarf of spectral type DA; the emission components at certain phases are due to hot regions in the disk, or in the outermost layers of the white dwarf.
