Old high-z objects provide one of the best methods for constraining the age of the Universe, and may also be an important key for determining the formation epoch of the first objects. In this work we investigate some observational constraints on decaying vacuum cosmologies from the old quasar APM 08279+5255 which is located at z = 3.91, and has an estimated age of 2-3 Gyr. The class of L(t) cosmologies adopted here is characterized by a positive b parameter smaller than unity which quantifies the ratio between the vacuum and the total energy density. By considering the age estimates of this quasar and the latest measurements of the Hubble parameter, we discuss how the the existence of this object constrains some quantities of cosmological interest. In particular, whether the age of the quasar is given by the lower limit (2 Gyr), and the matter density parameter is WM = 0.2, we find that the b parameter is constrained to be 3 0.07. For an age of 3 Gyr and WM = 0.4, b must be greater than 0.32. Our analysis includes closed, flat and hyperbolic scenarios, and it suggests that there is no age crisis for this kind of L(t) cosmologies. The lower limits to the redshift quasar formation are also briefly discussed to the flat case. It is found that for WM = 0.4 the redshift formation is constrained by zf 3 8.0.
