The generally accepted hypothesis of the composition of torbanite precursors has been shown to be incorrect. Contrary to previous thinking, the monomers largely responsible for coorongite, and torbanite, are not fatty acids or branched chain hydrocarbons but straight chain alkadienes arising from the green form of the alga. The rubbery deposit of the orange form of the alga is composed of polymerised botryococcenes.
