An interpretation of absorption lines in X-ray burst spectra recently observed from X1636-536 is presented, taking into account the influence of angular momentum associated with accreted gas upon the surface structure. For large accretion rates as in the case of X-ray bursters, the surface layers are expected to rotate very rapidly with the accretion disk near the equator, which affects the formation of absorption lines. In particular, the transverse Doppler effect due to this rotation is shown to be important in evaluating the redshift as well as the general relativistic effect. The mass-radius relation of the underlying neutron star is derived with allowances made for both effects. Furthermore, it is suggested that the occurrence of the absorption lines itself may afford an insight into the physical condition of the accreted gas in the vicinity of neutron stars.
