The ESA-Mission INTEGRAL (International Gamma-Ray Astrophysics Laboratory) is the next step in low-energy gamma-ray astronomy (up to 10 MeV) and will be launched in 2002. The spectrometer SPI-one of its two main instruments-is dedicated to high-resolution line spectroscopy (/ΔE=2.5 keV FWHM at 1.3 MeV). SPI will concentrate on the study of lines from radioactive isotopes. A wealth of new information is expected from interstellar line emission with narrow line profiles, but exciting results are also expected from line profile measurements of individual line emitting objects such as supernovae, supernova remnants, and novae.
