Sensitive observations of the Fe II, Mg I, Mg II, and Ca II lines in the spectrum of PKS 1229-021 at z = 0.39498 with the Multiple Mirror Telescope confirm previous deductions about the velocity structure of the absorber that were based on curve-of-growth analysis of optical data and the width of the 21 cm absorption profile. The velocity and opacity structure conforms to a multicloud picture where the line of sight to the QSO encounters both the disk and the halo of an intervening galaxy. The new observations also find a Mg I line of 'normal' strength in contrast to earlier observations. No Ca II lines are detected.
