With regard to the long-period behavior of the Chandler wobble parameters and the secular drift of the mean pole, the polar motion between 1900 and 1984 after Fedorov et al. (1972), BIH astrometry (1962-1973), and BIH combined solution (1973-1984) is studied. The hypothesis by Carter (1981) on the frequency modulation of the Chandler wobbler is supported and the observed phase shifts with rms error + or - 16 deg are explained by the nonlinear relationship between the frequency and amplitude. The confirmation of the existence of secular westward drift of the pole is considered. The period of Markowitz wobble is determined as 27.5 y and its effect is found to be most pronounced in data before 1962.
