A new statistic for the analysis of circular data is proposed. The power function of the test based on this statistic has been evaluated and the test has been found to be powerful against alternatives in the form of a uniform background plus a narrow peaked pulse. Critical values of the statistic are tabulated. A single peak plus background is expected in γ-ray observations of pulsars and binary X-ray sources at ultra-high energies and the proposed statistic should prove useful in analysing such observations.
