The authors have identified the optical counterpart of the X-ray burst source XB 1905+000 using multicolor CCD images obtained with the ESO 2.2 m telescope in May 1984. This faint star (V = 20.5) has a large UV excess (U-B = -0.5, B-V = 0.5), is found within the combined SAS-3/HEAO A-3 error box, and is furthermore consistent with the reprocessed Einstein HRI source position. Its X-ray to optical luminosity ratio is roughly 400, within the range for other low-mass binaries. If its absolute visual magnitude is close to the average value for other bursters, it may then be the most distant (20 kpc) optically identified object of this class.
