From the observed smoothness of the diffuse soft X-ray background the local ISM has been suggested to be either an extinction free, expanding emitting volume or an emission volume with very few clouds containing all interstellar mass. The background observations have furthermore been shown to have a very low probability, ≡1%, to be consistent with the cloud distribution predicted in the McKee and Ostriker model. This paper investigates the effect the observed distribution of clouds has on emission from regions more distant than ≡100 pc as observed in a 0.01 sr beam. The expected intensity is computed from the spatial frequency of the clouds' solid angles and optical depths. The near identity of the model intensity variation to the observed variation and the rather low probability for consistency suggest the possibility of a non-local origin for some fraction of the observed background.
