We propose five 2.5-hr observations (total of 45 ks) by XMM-Newton of the Earth's nightside polar regions to obtain spectral data of various auroral formations. Chandra has already proven that aurorae on Earth can be easily and effectively observed. We now need to characterise their soft X-ray spectra in order to establish the origin of the emission, and to search for radiation mechanisms other than electron bremsstrahlung.
