We request an XMM-Newton observation of the X-ray bright, radio loud supernova SN 1993J in M81. The observation will determine the evolution of its line spectrum and the changing pattern of abundance of elements as the reverse shock moves deeper into the ejecta, in turn constraining the nature of the exploded star. The Doppler velocity profile of the lines and the X-ray luminosity variation (correlated with variations in the radio and UV bands) are important diagnostics of the kinematic components in the gas and will anchor the theoretical models of the explosion. These observations will reveal how Cassiopeia A, a SN studied so successfully with the XMM-Newton and of a similar type, behaved when it was very young.
