SN1988Z is the most luminous supernova ever detected in X-rays. Observations in all bands indicate it is embedded in a dense medium. Competing models suggest that either the supernova shock front has already transitioned into the radiative phase, or it is propagating into a highly inhomogeneous CSM containing dense clouds of wind material. Either model makes SN1988Z unique. A 2004 Chandra observation shows that the SN still has an impressive luminosity of 3x10^39 erg/s (0.5-2.0 keV), but is dimming at a rapid rate. We propose a 50 ks EPIC/OM observation, which will allow a determination of whether the X-ray light curve has been constant over the entire history of X-ray observations, and thereby help to discriminate between the two models.
