We have reported a modulation in energy and flux of a 6 keV emission feature in NGC 3516 with XMM--Newton. The evolution appears to be cyclic with a timescale of 25 ks and agrees with the feature being an Fe K line emitted from an orbiting structure in the inner accretion disc. Theoretical modelling led to the X--ray estimate of the black hole mass from emission in the immediate vicinity of the black hole. Further long XMM--Newton observations of NGC 3516 are needed to confirm this potential breakthrough in black hole astrophysics. The scientific potential is such that direct probes of the inner accretion flow and of the spacetime geometry close to the black hole can be obtained, including constraints on black hole spin and on the radial drift induced by the accretion process itself.
