Efforts and progress in understanding the core of the Galaxy are related, studying active galactic nuclei. Observations reviewed suggest unusual activity and the possible existence of a massive black hole in the nucleus of the Galaxy. Because of its proximity, the Galactic nucleus can be observed at radio and IR wavelengths in detail. Radio maps and pseudocolor photographs are presented, and observations are described for the compact nonthermal radio source Sgr A(asterisk) ionized and neutral gas at the center, and mass determinations from motions of gas. Sgr A(asterisk) is the best candidate for a massive black hole.
