New evidence that volcanism played a significant role in producing the maria on the moon and the plains on Mercury is discussed. More extensive mappings of the distribution of the plains on Mercury dispute the notion that those plains resulted from debris thrown out from the great impact crater called Caloris. Comparison of crater counts have also shown that the smooth plains are distinctly younger than Caloris and its ejecta. Recent studies of the moon have revealed lunar craters that punched through to underlying dark basalt and threw it out to form a dark halo.
