The techniques currently being used for the quantitative determination of the large-scale structural parameters of the Galaxy are explained in a general review and illustrated with graphs, diagrams, and sample images. Parameters examined include the distance of the sun from the Galactic center (probably closer to 8 kpc than the 10 kpc previously accepted), the orbital velocity of the sun, and the rotation curves of the inner Galaxy and the Galaxy as a whole.
