The reverse magnetization mechanism is analyzed. Consideration is given to the field intensity and direction during a polarity transition, and changes in the mean reversal frequencies. Examples of geomagnetic excursions, which are caused by a change in the near-axial configuration of the earth's magnetic field, are presented. Various reversal models proposed to explain the reversal mechanism are described. A sequence of reversals which may result from instabilities in the MHD process in the core is examined. The potential correlation beteen the strength of the earth's magnetic field, the eccentricity of the earth's orbit, climate changes, and the evolution and extinction of species is studied.
