The pristine nucleus of a comet, in particular, its chemical composition
is studied. More immediate goals are to quantitatively compare the
mass-loss-rates of various periodic comets, and to map out the
distribution of coma region ions and neutral radicals with the hope of
indirectly determining their parent molecules.
