Observations of active galaxies in the energy range between 1 and 50 keV were evaluated. Planning, construction, and instrumentation of the EXOSAT satellite are presented. The hardware and software used for the data evaluation are described. Active galaxies, classes of active galaxies, radiation mechanisms, and accretion disks are presented. The results of the observations largely confirm previous observations. Variability in time is observed on different time scales.
