The results of a search for 1.612-GHz OH maser emission in a group of LMC objects comprising 17 IRAS sources (including two long-period variables and the H II region 30 Dor) and the H II region N159, performed using the 64-m Parkes telescope during December 1985, are reported. The selection of the sources is explained, and the data are presented in tables and graphs. Upper limits ranging from 0.08 to 0.29 Jy are determined for the OH flux of 17 of the objects, but one OH maser source, IRAS 04553-6825, is identified and found to have a circumstellar-material expansion velocity (11 km/s) much smaller than that of similar Galactic objects. It is suggested that the lower metal abundance in the LMC/SMC system may be responsible for the weaker OH emission (relative to Galactic objects with similar 25-micron/12-micron flux ratios) of the LMC/SMC OH/IR stars.
