Abundances of more than one hundred giants in a large sample of metal-rich open clusters in the Galaxy are investigated with Washington photometry. Most of these clusters have no high-dispersion spectroscopic abundance determinations. A revision of the empirical abundance calibrations for Population I giants, based on a much improved data set over previous calibrations, is first presented. The M-T(1) (Fe abundance) calibration changes slightly for stars with Fe/H of about -0.5. The C-M (Fe + CN abundance) calibration is substantially altered for abundances above solar. The net effect brings the two abundance indices into close agreement and eliminates the apparent CN enhancements previously determined for several open clusters. An enhanced sensitivity to Fe abundance is found for both the M - T(1) and especially the C - M index over that determined in previous investigations. Indeed, Delta(C - M) has an Fe abundance sensitivity that exceeds any other photometric abundance index. In view of the relative rarity of CN strength variations in Pop I giants, this index is most useful as a metallicity indicator for these stars. Abundances with an uncertainty of about 0.1 dex are derived for a total of 18 open clusters observed with the Washington system. The abundances are generally in good agreement with prior abundance analyses. No strong evidence is found for CN variations or anomalies in any of the clusters. A comparison with Population I field giants shows that the open cluster giants have normal CN abundances for their FE abundances.
