The light curve of SN 1054 and elemental abundances of the Crab Nebula indicate that the observed nebula is surrounded by a rapidly expanding shell. The ionization and temperature of this shell is calculated, and it is shown that for plausible parameters, the shell should be detectable as broad UV absorption features in the UV resonance lines of C IV, N V and O VI. The Crab pulsar provides a suitable background source.
