The parameters of dust grains in the shells around Herbig Ae/Be stars obtained by modeling the circumstellar extinction and polarization curves are discussed. The role of the light scattered by dust is analyzed in detail. Its contribution to the observed flux is larger in the visible than in the ultraviolet, especially for flattened shells seen pole-on. The minimum circumstellar-grain size and the dust mass have been found to increase with stellar luminosity. The observed polarization in stars is proportional to the degree of asphericity of the apparent shape of the shell.
