Specifications and performance goals are discussed for the NASA Telescope, which will provide a factor of 10 improvement in angular resolution in comparison to the largest ground-based optical telescopes. Advantages in observing globular clusters, cepheid variables and early-epoch quasars are certain to accrue from inauguration of Space Telescope operations, now scheduled for 1983. The optical telescope assembly, support systems module and solar array of the Space Telescope are described; attention is also given to the on-board scientific instruments, including the wide field/planetary camera, the faint object spectrograph, the faint object camera, the high resolution spectrograph, and the high speed photometer/polarimeter.
