Infrared photometry is presented of the eclipsing binary star and possible X-ray source V861 Sco, whose secondary is a black hole candidate. Light curves are presented for 1.2 and 2.2 microns and the observed secondary minima are used to calculate the ratio of secondary to primary surface brightness. The rapid decrease of the surface brightness of the secondary object from the visual to the IR shows the secondary to be nonstellar and it is proposed that it consists of a compact object surrounded by an optically thin accretion disk. The shallow secondary eclipse indicates that the primary star exhibits small ellipticity, implying that the photosphere does not fill its Roche lobe. Mass transfer could be accomplished through the inner Lagrangian point or by means of a stellar wind, in which case the secondary must contain a black hole. It is concluded that a more convincing identification of V861 Sco as an X-ray source is needed before it can be considered to be a black hole.
