The age and likely lifetime of the recently discovered Herculina binary asteroid system is estimated. The time-scale is sufficiently short to make it unlikely that the system is primordial. The formation of the system is discussed and it is shown that the satellite was probably formed by collision and ejected into an orbit of a few Herculina radii around Herculina. It then evolved outwards under the tidal torque exerted by Herculina to its present position as recently suggested by Dermott.
