The stability of the tidal wave on a non-synchronous component of a binary system is discussed. It is found that instabilities that propagate in the stationary frame with a characteristic frequency comparable to the tidal frequency may exist. The application of this result to close binary systems, including X-ray sources and cataclysmic variables is discussed.
