Measurements made with the COSMOS machine at the Royal Observatory, Edinburgh, in its mapping mode on a blue and red plate taken with the UK 1.2-m Schmidt telescope have been used to examine the static properties (positions, sizes, crude colours, orientations and shapes) for galaxies in the rich southern cluster at RA (1950) = 00h47m, Dec (1950) = -29°46', and redshift z = 0.11±0.01.
The presence of luminosity segregation is detected in the galaxy distribution, the brighter galaxies being more centrally concentrated than the fainter galaxies. Very blue galaxies preferentially avoid the cluster centre.
Orientations and shapes are measurable for galaxies down to an angular diameter of 7 arcsec. The most frequently occurring apparent ellipticity for galaxies is e = 0.3 which is also the projected ellipticity of the central galaxy. There is no segregation of the galaxies according to shape. Very blue galaxies are more elongated than very red galaxies. Smaller galaxies are systematically rounder than larger galaxies.
The dominant galaxy at the centre is aligned with its major diameter parallel with the major axis of the central galaxy distribution, but there is no systematic tendency for the surrounding galaxies to be similarly aligned. Galaxies do show a preference to be aligned with their major diameters parallel with the radius vector from the central galaxy. Very blue galaxies exhibit a random inclination with respect to the radius vector. There is no effect of the variation of this alignment tendency with radial distance or with size or shape of the galaxies.
