Remote measurement of tropospheric winds is recognized as one of the most important measurements for the atmospheric sciences. Winds can be measured as a function of altitude from satellites using lidar (LIght Detection And Ranging) systems which sense the Doppler shifted frequency of the laser signal backscattered from the atmosphere. NASA has had a long term commitment to developing the technologies required to enable global wind sensing. This paper describes recent developments in the Doppler lidar key technology areas.
