The relationship between the fundamental dimensionless numbers of physics and the possibility of life as we know it is underscored by pointing out, as an example, that if the Sommerfeld fine structure parameter increased, or if the gravitational interaction parameter were weakened, all stable stars would be too cool for life as we know it to develop on any of their planets. It is speculated that in the first three seconds of the big bang the properties of matter are symmetrical. As the temperature drops, hadrons and pions condense, and from then onwards, the fundamental constants as we define them in our present-day physics are 'frozen'. Their present observed values are thus historical data generated in the earliest epoch of the present cosmic cycle. The mechanism of the variation and freezing is a generalization of the Mach Principle, which argues that particle properties such as mass are not wholly intrinsic, but depend on the matter background.
