The unexpected apparitions of Comets Hale-Bopp (1995 O1) and Hyakutake (1996 B2) have yielded a wealth of exciting results. Comet Hyakutake was discovered less than two months before its closest approach to Earth (0.1AU) in March 1996. On the other hand Comet Hale-Bopp was discovered before perihelion, at 7 AU from the Sun, in July 1995 and is still being studied from southern hemisphere as well as orbital telescopes. Initial results include: a. information on the size and rotational characteristics of the nuclei; b. observations of complex coma structures such as jets and tailward condensations; c. discovery and confirmation of many parent molecules indicative of a presolar chemical signature; d. discovery of features such as the x-ray emission from both comets, and the sodium tail in Comet Hale-Bopp. The implications of these and other results on the origin and evolution of comets will be discussed.
