We derive new calibrations for far-ultraviolet (FUV) attenuation as derived from the total infrared (TIR) to FUV luminosity ratio (IRX) and the FUV-NUV color in an empirical way. We find that the IRX-corrected FUV luminosities are tightly and linearly correlated with the dust corrected Hα luminosities (as derived from the Balmer decrement), with a rms scatter of ± 0.09 dex. Therefore combinations of observed FUV luminosities and TIR luminosities are good star formation rate tracers. In contrast, the correlation between FUV-NUV color corrected FUV luminosities and Balmer-corrected Hα luminosities shows much larger (˜ 2.5 times) rms scatter and non-linearity.
