A theory is presented of the associative detachment process H + H(-) yields H2 + e based upon a complex potential formulation. Calculations are carried out of the individual cross sections for populating the accessible rotation-vibrational levels of H2 for incident energies equivalent to temperatures of 100 and 1000 K. The astrophysical significance of the process is discussed briefly, and attention is drawn to the importance of associative detachment as a source of rotationally and vibrationally excited molecular hydrogen in warm plasmas.
