The role of magnetic field and possible inversion mechanisms in OH main
line masers associated with compact H II regions (H II/OH regions, for
brevity) are discussed. It is argued that the most plausible explanation
for the inversion effect is collisions with particle streams, though the
exact nature of the pump is not established.
