Aspects of the detection, evolution and dynamics of close binary stars in globular clusters are considered. Observed eclipsing binaries are shown to be unlikely to be members of globular clusters, and it is proposed that noneclipsing binaries with mass exchange (U Geminorum type stars, novae or X-ray sources) be sought. Tidal capture and direct collision models of two body capture in clusters are discussed for an isothermal model of the cluster core and shown to predict a greater proportion of close binary systems than estimates based on primordial binaries alone. The capture models are related to core shrinkage and the possible formation of black holes and X-ray sources. It is suggested that further optical detection, luminosity and X-ray observations of globular clusters be made in order to decide among the models.
