Recent discovery of a large number of distant galaxies that lie at least 12 billion light years from the Earth allows researchers for the first time to observe directly the architecture of the early universe, including the size, brightness, and distribution of some of the first galaxies to form. One of the most prominent features of the distant galaxies is that they are strongly clustered rather than being distributed randomly in space. Hypotheses accounting for the clustering of the early galaxies are examined.
