Total ion and electron production rates in the plasma cloud around the Giotto spacecraft are estimated, based on updated models of particle impact on the Halley Probe shield. At 500 km from the comet nucleus, 1.6 times 10 to the 19th power molecules/sec hit the spacecraft shield, releasing 3.2 times 10 to the 19th power neutral secondaries, 1.6 times 10 to the 14th power to 1.6 times 10 to the 13th power ions, and 3.2 to 6.4 times 10 to the 18th power electrons. The shield is assumed to be covered by a 1 to 10 micron thick gold layer. Dust particles produce a total of 3 times 10 to the 19 th power ions and electrons at the same distance. At a fly-by speed of 69 km/sec, the energy is 24 eV per amu. The mean components of the cometary gas hit the shield with 432 eV in the case of H20, and 1056 eV in the case of C02. These interactions result in the release of secondary particles.
