It is suggested that the probability of occurrence of polar auroras is inversely proportional to the cold-plasma density in the magnetosphere. In the region of open magnetic field lines or field lines that extend far into the magnetotail, the cold-plasma density is determined by the plasma density in the maximum of the F-region. A high-density tongue, observed in the unilluminated polar cap for the southward direction of the IMF, produces an increase of cold-plasma density in the magnetosphere and the disappearance of auroras from the polar cap. For the northward direction of the IMF, the region of high density in the ionosphere and magnetosphere has the form of a ring, framing the polar cap. In this case, auroras appear in the polar cap and disappear from the oval.
