Long-slit spectrophotometric observations obtained for the spiral galaxy M51 at three position angles are presented, showing a large ratio of forbidden lines N II/H-alpha throughout a nuclear region within a 9 arcsec radius from the center of the galaxy. The kinematics of the gas is discussed, and it is suggested that gas in the nuclear core is ionized by a nonstellar central souarce of radiation. The broad emission lines throughout the central core indicate turbulent velocities of up to 200 km/s, and it appears likely that the central ionizing source in the nucleus is also responsible for these large turbulent velocities.
