Consequences that the Tully-Fisher (TF) relation may have on the structure of galaxies are investigated. The resulting relationship of mass-to-luminosity and between the concomitant quantities luminous radius and rotation velocity are explored. The slope of the TF relation is combined with the slope of the relation between surface brightness and rotation velocity to yield a distance-dependent method for comparing relative mass-to-light ratios among galaxies. The extent to which the results are affected by the hybrid optical/infrared definitions of luminosity and surface brightness are examined, and the Hubble type-dependent effects are shown to be small relative to the observed variations. The Aaronson et al. (1980) application of the infrared TF relation to obtain distances for galaxies is shown to imply that galaxies of the same Hubble type can have very different M/Ls, or that galaxies with the same luminosities can have very different M/Ls with the same TF relation.
