Precise distance moduli from optical tertiary indicators, and weighted mean moduli from 21-cm line widths are presented for 37 spiral galaxies of types Sab to Sdm in the Virgo S cloud. The mean distance modulus is derived, and the velocity-distance relation in the direction of and within the cloud is established, which is interpreted by a model consisting of a collapsing core surrounded by an escaping halo of the kind predicted by numerical simulations of cluster evolution. The depth of the cluster is derived from the distance moduli, and the model predicts a difference of magnitude between the near side galaxies which have higher velocities, and the far side galaxies which have lower velocities.
