The CN Spectrum from the IR to the UV
The diatomic molecular spectrum of the CN has been of interest to physicists and astronomers for many years. A book containing a comprehensive analysis of the Red system was the first major publication of the Analysis of Molecular spectrum program at Berkeley, begun in 1959. Later, a finding-list was constructed and made available on the internet. The light sources were a carbon arc in air, a King furnace, and an electric discharge in cyanogen gas. The spectrometer was a Pashen mounted concave diffraction grating. We are now extending our analysis to cover the region from 1800 to 31000 cm-1 (5600 to 320 nm). It includes the vibration-rotation spectrum as well as the Violet system. The light sources are a carbon arc, King furnace, acetylene flame, hollow cathode, inductively coupled plasma, electrodeless discharge tubes containing several isotopic mixtures, and a nitrogen afterglow discharge tube. The spectrometer is the fourier transform spectrometer at Kitt Peak. We have identified 50 bands free enough from blending to be analyzed. The variety of excitation of levels and consequent intensities and line widths from the various sources is striking.
