Various direct methods for determining the distance to NGC 7027 are discussed. The first, 21 cm absorption in the intervening material, is shown to give very clear limits to the distance. These limits are still further sharpened by two other methods: a comparison of the intrinsic H-beta luminosities of NGC 7027 and extragalactic planetary nebulae; and a comparison of the density determined by H beta flux, which is dependent on the distance, with the density as determined by forbidden lines and radio recombination lines, which is not distance dependent. The result is a distance of between 1 and 1.5 kpc.
