We present ultraviolet photometry for globular clusters (GCs) in M31 from 15 square degree of imaging using the Galaxy Evolution Explorer (GALEX). Of the 384 GCs with both V and B-V data in Barmby et al. (2000), 302 (about 78 182 (about 47 respectively. Our limiting magnitude for NUV and FUV is about 22.5 AB magnitude. We found four candidate metal-rich ([Fe/H] > -1.0) clusters with significant FUV flux because of the contribution of blue horizontal-branch (HB) stars, such as NGC 6388 and NGC 6441, which are peculiar metal-rich Galactic GCs with hot HB stars. Comparing our data with Galactic GCs in the UV and with population synthesis models, we suggest that the ages of old GCs in M31 and Galactic halo GCs are similar. We found many young cluster candidates in M31 with bluer UV colors, which is consistent with the age ( < 1 Gyr) derived from the most recent high-quality spectroscopic observations of Beasley et al. (2004) and Burstein et al. (2004). We suggest that the age range of M31 GCs is wider than that of the Milky Way, while no such very young GCs are known in the Milky Way. From the GALEX All-sky Imaging Survey obervations, the UV color-magnitude diagrams for three Galactic GCs, M2, M72, and NGC 288, are also presented.
GALEX is a NASA Small Explorer, launched in April 2003. We gratefully acknowledge NASA's support for construction, operation, and science analysis for the GALEX mission. Yonsei University participation is funded by the Korean Ministry of Science & Technology, for which we are also grateful.
