Our understanding of the distribution of atomic carbon in molecular clouds has been evolving with our ability to observe it. CI was originally perceived to be in the low AV envelope of dense clouds, where self-shielding of CO is not sufficient. The large maps of CI (such as those by ASTRO and SWAS), however, tend to show a good spatial correlation between CI and CO. The limb brightening effect is not shown as expected from a simple envelop. It is proposed that CI is mixed with molecular gas. Our efforts to map 4 square degree of Ophiuchus in both CO isotopologues and CI provide a good data set to study this problem carefully. Although spatially similar, CI and CO possess different turbulence in the Ophiuchus clouds. Based on our 3d radiative transfer model, a straightforward way to understand both the spatial and dynamic relationship between CO and CI is to place them in clump and inter-clump medium separately.
