We analysed data from five XMM-Newton observations of GX 13+1, to investigate the variability of the photo-ionised absorber present in this source. Three of the observations showed a high variability in their light curves. In one observation we detected a decrease of the average count rate by more than 80% with associated spectral hardening. This is typical of dipping behaviour. The detection of dipping behaviour, if confirmed, determines the inclination of the binary to be >~70.
